Looking forward to the summer season – it’s worth planning ahead

You can enjoy outdoor living to its fullest when the sun shines high in the sky – thanks to the idyllic shaded areas.

The changing seasons bring us variety and new pleasures. But as the days get longer and warmer, we long to spend time in our gardens or out on our terraces. Outdoor living is like being on holiday where you are out in the fresh air and not cooped up within the confines of four walls. Instead, you feel the warm rays of the sun on your skin. If the summer of 23 is anything like the glorious one we experienced last year, we can expect to enjoy many sun-filled days!

Did you notice that your seating or outing dining areas did not have enough shade or UV protection last year? Or are you considering replacing your mobile sunshade with a permanent installation? Then now is the time to turn your ideas into reality. It is worth planning ahead for several reasons: You can take your time searching for the right product and choose the shade of the fabric without rushing. Then, when the first warm rays of sunshine come, you are ready to enjoy your outdoor space without restrictions.

Whether it’s sun blinds or awnings, terrace roofs or pergolas you are after – Schenker Storen has a wide range on offer that accommodates individual preferences in terms of size, design and colour.

Sun blinds and awnings protect balconies and terraces against the rays of the sun and overheating. The awning fabric keeps out the UV rays and is designed for use outdoors making it weather-resistant. Schenker Storen models, however, have long offered more than just protection against the effects of the weather and UV rays. They can be fitted with specific features on request. For example, dimmable LED lighting is integrated in the underside of the cubic cassette awning KKM 7’s cassette. In the case of the award-winning KGM 6+, the dimmable LED light source is built into the articulated arms. You can continue to relax on your terrace in a softly lit atmosphere during the summer nights, even after the sun has set.

You do not need any elaborate planning or a building permit to install sun blinds.

Terrace canopies and pergolas enrich your garden, seating area and outdoor lounge in many ways. They extend the warm spring and hot summer evenings in almost any weather. But that’s not all. They even prolong the outdoor season to autumn – some models can even create precious outdoor living space for the cold days of winter. Because they are impervious to the effects of the wind, sun and rain. Discreetly built-in LED panels in the frame construction also lend a touch of romance to your get-togethers. The fabric canopy can be extended to suit your preferences, so you can shade just a section of your secluded oasis if you wish. Since terrace roofs and pergolas are fixed constructions, they usually require a building permit. How to obtain planning permission applications is outlined below.

The professionals from Schenker Storen will of course be happy to help you with this – we will also gladly assist in selecting the right design for your sun shade.

Overview of models:

Terrace roof

Thanks to its see-through glass roof, the outdoor area can be used pretty much all year round: for BBQs in the summer and fondues in the winter. It lets in a lot of light and you feel like you are dining under the stars. The awning is extended on hot summer days transforming the outdoor lounge or roof terrace into a sanctuary in the shade. Various options, such as side glazing and fabric blinds, provide additional comfort, while the integrated dimmable LEDs create an atmospheric setting. Design variants: sloping roof, mounted flush on the wall.

Slatted roof

The slatted roof is the ideal all-weather protection solution for gardens and large terraces. Its ingenious technology ensures the heat does not build up under the roof, as the warm air flows up through the movable slats, and the cooler air naturally moves down towards the seating areas. As with the terrace roof, additional features are also available to suit the user’s wishes and circumstances, for example: side glazing, fabric blinds and integrated LEDs.

Design variants: free-standing or wall mounted /niche installation

Folding pergola

Its effortless, cubic design allows the folding pergola to blend in discreetly with the house’s modern architecture. The gentle curve of its canopy, although eye-catching, serves a pragmatic function: The rainwater slides off the waterproof fabric into the corrosion-resistant aluminium construction. Side glazing, fabric blinds and LEDs further extend its potential uses, creating a sheltered oasis under the pergola. Permits for erecting a folding pergola are usually easier to obtain since the fabric, and therefore the roof, is flexible.

Design variants: free-standing or installation on wall.

ZIP pergola

This model offers even more advantages than a sun blind as it provides stability, thanks to its profiles, and reliable protection against the wind and rain. The sturdy weather-resistant fabric can be rolled away into the cassette, where it is well-protected from moisture. With the addition of side glazing, fabric blinds and LED lighting, you can spend your time outside at any time of the day. As with the folding pergola, obtaining building permission for the ZIP pergola is more straightforward as its fabric and roof are flexible, too.

Individuality writ large

All the sun shades can be individually adapted to suit your residence and wishes, in terms of both size and colour. The aluminium constructions can be modified to match the look of the house facade, windows and outdoor furniture. The aluminium components are powder coated, making them weather and scratch resistant as well as durably colourfast. At Schenker Storen, we believe the fabric should be individual too, so we take steps to ensure this: You are sure to find the right fabric design for your sun roof from the 350 options on offer.

Barbecuing under the terrace roof, chatting under the pergola aperitif in hand, and snacking or reading your favourite book under the shielding sun blinds – that’s something you can already look forward to.

Step-by-step guide to obtaining planning permission

Planning permission is required for terrace roofs and pergolas. It can be obtained by submitting a planning permission application. We are happy to help you with the process.

  • Contact the local council: Your local council will provide you with the planning permission application form and other useful information. We recommend discussing your construction project in person with the responsible building authority and procuring the relevant information in writing.
  • Let your neighbours know: Communicate your plans with full transparency at an early stage. This can speed up the approval and implementation considerably, as well as nip objections in the bud. The written consent of your neighbours helps simplify the process. For more information on how to simplify proceedings, please contact your responsible building authority.
  • Submitting your planning permission application: Submit the filled out planning permission application form and required documents to the official office. These documents include an officially certified cadastral plan, which you will receive from the building authority.
  • Building permit issuance: As soon as the local council gives your project the green light and any objections have been resolved, you can proceed with the planning and realisation of your terrace roof or pergola.
