Elegant Integrated Sunshade Solution
Project Schartenrain multi-family building in Baden
Facts & Figures
Year of construction: 2020-2021
Client: KMP Architektur AG
Region: Baden
Perched on the steep southern slope of the Lägern in Wettingen, this thoughtfully designed residential development blends effortlessly into the surrounding natural terrain. Comprising two apartment units and five terraced flats, the buildings follow the natural contours of the land and offer sweeping views across the Limmat Valley. To avoid extensive use of retaining walls, the minimalist apartment building was carefully planned in harmony with the landscape – both in terms of access along the eastern side and the integration with neighbouring properties. Schenker Storen was commissioned to plan and implement the bespoke sunshade solution for this unique project.
Elegant solution through collaboration
From the early planning phase, Schenker Storen's experts were closely involved in the project to tailor a solution that met its exact requirements. Key priorities included sun protection, wind stability, and transparency – all while respecting the architectural aesthetic and accommodating window heights of up to four metres.
Where design meets performance
Once the initial plans were in place, the client visited Schenker Storen’s showroom in Baden to examine, test, and finalise the proposed systems. The extendable blind AS 95 was chosen for the façade windows. With retractable arms that can be freely adjusted up to 180°, it offers excellent shading without compromising on natural daylight. Wind-stable vertical ZIP blinds with a standard, opaque fabric were chosen for the bedrooms – the perfect solution for the exposed setting and to ensure privacy where needed.
Creative logistics for challenging terrain
The steep hillside location and compact layout posed certain logistical challenges, particularly when delivering the blinds to the individual terraces. To solve this, the blinds were passed from one level to the next and installed floor by floor. At a later stage, additional sun blinds were added for terrace shading, precisely positioned using a crane lorry.
An example of successful teamwork
This project serves as a prime example of how early collaboration between technical experts and architects can result in a solution that not only complements the design language but also delivers first-class functionality.
