An exciting urban mix

The quarter consisting of two apartment buildings, a daycare centre and another building, is part of a project to transform the former Turley Barracks in Mannheim whose magnificent listed army barracks buildings date back to the German imperial period. Interwoven with alleys, the imposing buildings are grouped around a central town square and give the newly created area the feel of an autonomous city. The result is a fascinating ensemble of old and new architecture. Using just a few basic materials such as plastered bricks, load-bearing reinforced concrete, wood and steel, really brings the monolithic architecture to the fore. And because there isn’t any insulating material, the construction is method is both future-oriented and traditional, in addition to working well in terms of energy.

Fascinating facade design through steel elements

The edging mounts and folding sliding shutters made of aluminium that frame the window openings freely positioned in the facades stand out in contrast from the walls made of Poroton bricks, and give the facade an unmistakably unique look. Integrating the 4-sided metal frames into the buildings with modern folding sliding elements made of aluminium was a major challenge. Thanks to our many years of experience, we were already able to provide significant support in this regard during the planning phase.

Comfortable living

The modern wind, weather and sun protection solution made of aluminium in a special colour the IGP-classic 591T (copper tone) can be easily opened and closed like an accordion, without a large opening radius, and it folds away neatly in the soffit making it extremely space-saving. A successful blend of two models of folding sliding shutters, 502 in total, were installed to create a pleasant net-like transparency with the additional bonus of a sleek metal filling to ensure complete darkening, especially for the sleeping quarters. In addition to meeting the highest demands in terms of aesthetics, the fine meshes of the stretch grilles measuring 62x25x9.0x2.0 mm don’t just provide conditions for the ideal room climate, they also creates atmospheric lighting conditions that stylishly underscore the ambience of the interior spaces.
