Sunnehof in Fällanden Project

Advanced Minergie-P Timber Frame Construction

Facts & Figures

Year of construction: 2022

Building owner: Fokus AG

Region: Fällanden

A remarkable six-storey apartment building comprising 42 units stands in the rural setting of Fällanden, Zurich. Remarkable because it is made from wooden elements and meets the Minergie-P standard, meaning it also corresponds to the principles of the 2000-watt society. The interior walls within the timber frame construction are made from cross-laminated timber.

The ceilings feature a wood-concrete composite solution with exposed cross-laminated timber, while the external facade is defined by a pre-aged wood look. Schenker Storen’s contribution is unmistakable: aluminium sliding shutters elegantly integrated in the facade, and outdoor curtains on the balconies. This order required not only meticulous planning and precision in its realisation, but the building’s control system also had to be adapted.

Sliding shutters as design features

Aluminium sliding shutters are an ideal solution especially in new buildings with large window surfaces. Beyond protecting against excessive light and prying eyes, they also integrate into the facade as customisable design features.

At Sunnhof, the carefully selected sliding shutters subtly enhance the building’s linear design while providing dependable glare protection and privacy. Plus, the hollow-chamber profile of the aluminium sliding shutters selected ensures an effortless operation. Further advantages: they are easy to maintain and practically maintenance-free.

Convenient wireless control

Minimising thermal bridges is essential for meeting the insulation standard required by the Minergie-P standard. Great care was taken not to penetrate the facade while installing the sliding shutters. A wireless solution using radio frequency (RF) was installed instead of running cables into the apartments for the control system. Consequently, the existing motors for the 168 sliding shutters were fitted with RF technology and each one was carefully programmed to prevent interference between apartments.

Precise planning is crucial

To ensure a seamless installation in this unique Minergie-P standard timber construction, specifications were thoroughly planned in advance and tested using a sample setup. In addition to the sliding shutters, the building owners wanted outdoor curtains on the recessed balconies. These allow residents to darken their interior living space and provide an additional layer of insulation, especially during cold winter nights or hot summer days.
